Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina 'Dissecta', is an attractive native cutleafed shrub that can be used as an accent or in mass plantings.
The finely divided green foliage turns a beautiful orange and fire red in fall. The twisted branches are revealed after the foliage drops. Many liken the bare branches to deers' antlers, hence the name 'staghorn'.
It forms a wide spreading shape at maturity. This xeriscape sumac cultivar is a large, open, spreading shrub or small tree.
The greenish flame shaped fruit turn bright red in autumn and persist through the winter, providing food for birds and wildlife.
Cutleaf Staghorn has no serious insect or disease problems. Plant massed for stabilizing embankments or for hard-to-cover areas with poor soils or for naturalizing in wild areas.
Grows best in average, dry to medium moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.
